Okay Progressive Peeps...

Got a comment yesterday on my review of Dream Theater's Octavarium questioning my dislike of the band and the CD. That's cool. Usually things like that make me take a second look at whoever it is and see if I can't connect with it somehow. I think my problem with some of the more progressive stuff is that I get bored with it because, really, it's like listening to classical music. You have to be paying attention and sometimes that just makes me tired.

However, nothing cool comes out until August 7th (Sixpence's new album) so I'm gonna give some more progressive stuff a try. Here's what YOU can do, gentle reader - suggest your favorite progressive metal or rock albums and I'll try to check them out (money permitting). At the very least I will track down samples and put them on my want list if I like them.

Suggest away!

  1. I'm afraid I can't be of much help. I don't really care much for prog. Mostly it makes me change the station.

  2. Are you really wanting to open this can of worms?

Like you, I've yet to get hooked on really technical progressive music. But I LOVE LOVE LOVE well written melodic music that keeps things fresh and interesting by changing around the meter or including four or five bridges. I went through my collection and made up a list but from what I think I know of your tastes I would recommend "Day for Night" by Spock's Beard. Next up, in order of recommendation are:
    V - Spock's Beard
    Sola Scripture - Neal Morse
    Porcupine Tree - in absentia
    Estradasphere - Palace of Mirrors
    Oceansize - Frames
Bryan Scary - Flight of the Knife
    Self - Subliminal Plastic Motives
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - In Glorious Times
Stolen Babies - There Be Squabbles Ahead
And give Jelly Jam another try, eh?
